Electrotherapy
Electrotherapy
As physiotherapists, we aim to maintain a hands-on approach to treatment and are known for our exceptional manual therapy skills. However many electrotherapy modalities are effective tools to use alongside hands-on and exercise based treatments.
Some forms of electrotherapy include Interferential Current (IFC) Therapy or Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS). The electrical stimulation, often felt as a comfortable tingling sensation, acts on pain fibres to inhibit pain. This reduction in pain aids in reducing swelling, improving circulation and relaxing muscles.
Quite often this immediate reduction in pain can make it easier to perform therapeutic exercise, especially for those experiencing acute levels of pain.
